Bangkok or "Krunthep", directly translated "the city of the angles", is a city of contrasts. In keeping with the basic Thai nature of relaxed tolerance, ancient and modern happily coexistence side by side; this sprawling metropolis (covering 1567 sq /605 sq miles) has some of the world's most beautiful temples and ancient Buddhist shrines. It also has an emerging downtown skyline of high-rise skyscrapers, the elevated Skytrain and some of world's worst traffic jams, along with the inevitable noise and pollution. Bangkok is a renowned location for shopping and dining out. It is also the world's hottest capital city. The average temperature is 36C; it rarely goes below 25C, and from March to May, can creep up to 42C.
